New England in the Fall

New England is famous for its autumn foliage, when leaves transform into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and purples. This New England Falls Colours itinerary begins in the cosmopolitan city of Boston, where you’ll spend a night enjoying its many dining and cultural attractions. From here, take a scenic drive through Vermont, stopping off for essential leaf peeping or to taste local brews and maple syrup. Spend two days in Woodstock, known as the prettiest small town in America. End the trip in Washington, Connecticut, where you can see the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood and a final flourish of fall foliage.

DAYS 1-2
UK - Boston, Massachusetts

On arrival at Boston’s Logan International Airport, we'll drive you into the city direct to your hotel, the Fairmont Copley Plaza. Its central downtown location means many of Boston’s historic sights are right on your doorstep. Visit Boston Common, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, or walk the Freedom Trail, which passes through 16 significant locations in America’s history. Dinner in a swish downtown restaurant is a great way to end each day.

DAY 4
Stowe, Vermont
Today, you’ll head west along the scenic Kancamagus Highway, a 55-kilometre route popular with leaf peepers, on the picturesque drive to Vermont. On the way, why not cool off at the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory, or swing by the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. We also recommend stopping off at the Shelburne Museum, one of the most diverse and unconventional collections of art and Americana in the US.

DAYS 5 - 6
Woodstock, Vermont
This morning Woodstock, Vermont is on the agenda, named as the prettiest small town in America. Named after Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England, as homage to both Blenheim Palace and its owner, George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, the town was first settled in 1768. There is plenty to do in Woodstock and a perfect stop to recharge and sample a few local brews in town. We would highly recommend the equally pretty 506 on the River for the next two nights.

DAYS 7 - 8
Lenox, Massachusetts
Today, you’ll drive through the Green Mountains towards Manchester, Vermont. The scenic Route 7 is also famous for its colourful autumn foliage. Stop en route at Hildene, the former estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son. On arrival in Lenox, check into the Cranwell Resort for the next two nights. Perhaps book concert tickets at Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony's summer home. We also recommend the Norman Rockwell Museum in neighbouring Stockbridge, which displays his iconic paintings of America's past.

DAYS 9 - 10
Washington, Connecticut
Conclude your New England itinerary at Washington, Connecticut, one of the most romantic spots in New England. For the next two nights, you’ll recharge your batteries at the Mayflower Grace, an exquisite country retreat set in 25 hectares of landscaped gardens and woodland. This quaint small town is famed for its local farms, good food and hidden hiking trails, where you can enjoy a last look at the fall’s fabulous foliage.

DAY 11
Washington, Connecticut
For a shorter return flight to the UK, consider heading to New York City. It’s a 90-minute drive from Washington. After the quiet idyll of the New England countryside, you way well welcome some high-octane city action before you head home.
