Switzerland June 2018

Lauren was lucky enough to join Titan Travel and the Swiss Tourist Board on an escorted tour of Switzerland in June 2018

I flew from London Heathrow to Geneva with Swiss Air. The flight was very comfortable and the service from the cabin crew was excellent. You receive a complimentary soft drink and snack during your flight, and a chocolate before landing. You can upgrade your flight to have a meal onboard.

From Geneva airport we travelled to Bern by train. The rail station is located beneath the airport and is clearly sign posted. The journey from Geneva is approx. 1 hour 20 minutes including a change of change in Lausanne. The views from Geneva to Bern are spectacular as you travel alongside Lake Geneva.

When we arrived in Bern, we were met by a local English-speaking guide at the train station. She gave us a city tour of Bern. I strongly suggest a city tour, and this was the best way of seeing Bern. She showed us all the popular attractions whilst also pointing out the little hidden corners.

We stayed in Bern for 2 nights at the Hotel Allegro. Hotel Allegro is in a great location, just a few minutes’ walk over the bridge will take you in to the centre on Bern. I had a Panorama Double with a view, The Panorama rooms of the Hotel Allegro face south and are located on the 4th floor. They offer guests a spectacular panoramic view extending over Bern’s historic old town to the distant Bernese Alps.

Whilst staying in Bern we took a trip to Schilthorn-Piz Gloria (James Bond mountain). This involved taking various trains and cable cars from Bern.  It is absolutely worth doing this! The most impressive 360-degree panorama-experience in the Alps awaits you here! We enjoyed lunch in the 360-degree restaurant Piz Gloria, here you can enjoy breath-taking view of Eiger, Monach and Jungfaru and more than 200 other mountain peaks.  On our way back to Bern we stopped at Trummelbach Falls – Glacier waterfalls tumbling in a mountain are illuminated and accessible by tunnel lift. These are the only accessible mountain-interior glacier falls in Europe.

From Bern we travelled to Brig by train. In Brig we joined the Glacier Express to Filisur – Worlds slowest express train through the alps. This was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend. The views were spectacular! The journey was approx. 8 hours, passing through 91 tunnels and over 291 bridges.

After our amazing experience on board, the Glacier Express we travelled by train from Filisur to Davos. We stayed in Davos for 3 Nights at the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvedere. The Hotel is centrally located in the heart of Davos, just a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Many of celebrities have stayed at this hotel. I stayed in a superior room with a small balcony with views across Davos. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay here.

Whilst staying in Davos we joined the Bernina Express from Davos Platz to Tirano, return. The Bernina Express is a panoramic train which connects the North of Europe to its south – right through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Rhaetian Railway. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines of up to 70 per mile with ease. The views are stunning and take your breath away!

We took a Funicular in Davos to Schatzalp which is located 300m above Davos, a nostalgic Art Nouveau style building with its Belle Epoque atmosphere. It opened its doors in 1900 as a luxury sanatorium and was later converted into a mountain hotel. In Schatzalp we visited the Alpine Garden and enjoyed lunch at the Panorama Restaurant. The views here were beautiful.

On our last day before flying home from Zurich we visited Chur. Chur is Switzerland’s oldest city which charms visitors with its fine mountain setting. Its such a charming city, worth visiting.

We flew home from Zurich to Heathrow with Swiss Air, again the flight was excellent.

We had a 4-day 1st Class Swiss Travel pass which entitles you to unlimited travel on consecutive days throughout the rail, bus and boat Swiss Travel System network. The pass also covers scenic routes and local trams and buses in around 90 towns and cities and Mount Rigi, Stanserhorn & Schilthorn Mountain excursions. The pass offers up to 50% reduction on most other mountain-top trains and cable cars. The Swiss Travel Pass also includes the Swiss Museum Pass allowing you free entrance to 500 museums and exhibitions. It is worth including one of these when you travel to Switzerland.

I had an incredible time in Switzerland and would return without a doubt. I don’t have a favourite part as I loved every second!
